Some people may know her as the social media whiz @frecklesnur and others as Nuria Val from Barcelona, Spain. Together with her photographer boyfriend Coke Bartrina she travels the world, breaking the route in search of new adventures and inspiring sceneries to capture with their cameras.
We asked them to shoot our spring summer collection during their California road trip earlier this autumn. They started in San Francisco and kept on to Yosemite, Mono Lake, Death Valley, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, seeking out unique places off the beaten track. We finally got the chance to hear all about their best road trip memories, experiences and inspirations.
Tell us more about the road trip?
Nuria: I loved every single moment of the trip. It was really exciting and we got to visit so many beautiful and unique places, everything from the beach to the desert.
Coke: The road trip was an amazing experience. We flew from Barcelona to San Francisco, rented a car and hit the road. We didn’t have so much planned so we improvised all the way to Los Angeles and it turned out great. We visited and stayed at a lot of different places during our way, everything from motels to ranches.
Best stop during the road trip?
Nuria: I have to say that Death Valley was one of the best stops during our road trip. I had high expectations and it was even better than what I expected.
Coke: Death Valley was definitely one of the most amazing places we visited. Even though it was 46ºC degrees we still kept on driving and stopping by the road to take photos. When we were shooting with the American flag in the middle of the desert some combat planes flew over us and that moment was just epic.
A moment you will never forget on the road trip?
Nuria: Without a doubt my best memory was when we spent one night in an RV near to Death Valley. We were surrounded by an incredible sky full of shining stars, I’ve never seen anything like that before. It was breathtaking.
Coke: It’s very difficult to choose just one moment since the whole experience was very special but I have to say that sleeping in an RV in the middle of the desert was very cool.
What does travelling mean to you?
Nuria: Travelling means everything to me, I could never stop. It’s one of my biggest inspiration sources. Having the chance to meet new people, experience different cultures, visiting unique places while documenting it all in photographs, it’s just amazing.
Coke: Travelling means exploring different cultures, landscapes, meeting new people, trying new food and many other things that are yet to be discovered when I arrive to a place I’ve never been before. It means not staying on the main road since the most special things usually happens when you break the route.
What are your ultimate travel essentials?
Nuria: Cameras, a map and a lot of fruit!
Coke: My Leatherman Wave knife, my cameras and a backpack where I can put all my stuff.
Where do you find inspiration?
Nuria: It’s difficult to say when it happens but I usually get inspired when I arrive at a place, when I’m really there, you know, in the present and can catch the vibes.
Coke: Nowhere in particular, you never know what you’ll find a couple of kilometers away. I think it’s a matter of being awake and understanding your feelings when you see something that captures your attention.
"TRAVELLING MEANS EXPLORING DIFFERENT CULTURES, LANDSCAPES, MEETING NEW PEOPLE, TRYING NEW FOOD AND MANY OTHER THINGS THAT ARE YET TO BE DISCOVERED WHEN I ARRIVE TO A PLACE I’VE NEVER BEEN BEFORE. IT MEANS NOT STAYING ON THE MAIN ROAD SINCE THE MOST SPECIAL THINGS USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN YOU BREAK THE ROUTE. - COKE"
Favorite Dr. Denim item from the road trip?
Nuria: The dungarees, I’m in love!
Coke: I would say the Jon SS regular shirt in black smoke together with the Mac shorts in black vintage.
Tell us more about your photography?
Nuria: I just want to do what makes me happy and travelling like this and expressing myself and what I feel through photos is the best way for me.
Coke: It’s difficult talking about my own photography since I don’t really know what makes it look as it does but I’d say I like to keep it natural.
What are your fashion essentials?
Nuria: Always shorts and cropped tops.
Coke: Jeans and my Sebago shoes that I have been wearing for ages.
