Get to know our local Newcastle Stockist

Posted on October 20, 2016 by Dr Denim Online Store

We caught up with Tim - owner and founder of Abicus, one of our much loved and revered stockists in Newcastle, NSW.

Established in 2000, Abicus is one of the founding fashion destinations in the area. Housing a wide range of men’s and women’s fashion labels- including, yours truly Dr Denim, Abicus  is also known for its specialized selection of cd's, vinyl, music books, Impossible Project Film and vintage Polaroid cameras. Make sure to pop in next time you’re in the area!

How long has Abicus been around?
16 Years this October

What keeps you busy outside of Abicus duties?
I have a five month old son Leo who is most definitely keeping me busy... in the best possible way I might add! What a wild and wonderful ride these young beings are.

Do you have a favourite shop playlist?
Most definitely! My favourite in-store record of now is the recent vinyl release of Archy Marshall (King Krule) “A New Place 2 Drown”.. late 90’s trip-hop inspired UK beats. So so damn good! In fact, we literally had it on repeat all day last Sunday. Ha! Massive fan of Miles Davis 'Kind Of Blue' and Bill Evans ‘Live At The Village Vanguard' in-store too and for an afternoon lift The Whitest Boy Alive ‘Rules’ is always a good time.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?
Right now without a doubt it would have to be ice-cream, ice-cream, ice-cream… where this newly sharpened sweet tooth has come from I do not know. Connoisseurs is dangerous!

What would you be doing if you weren't running Abicus?
Perhaps running a vintage guitar store… Hmm this is a good question. Tiff & I had always thought that if we didn't have Abicus we would be in Melbourne, but I tell you what, Newcastle is such a magic spot. So much opportunity. So many great people. It’s a five minute drive to the store or to the beach from our house… we feel very lucky! I honestly cannot get my head around the prospect of life without Abicus. Ha!

What piece of advice would you give someone looking to open up their own boutique?
Working with labels/products that inspire you is essential. Point of difference is key. Your in-store environment/experience is as important as what you’re selling / take the time to create something special & unique. Respect the established stores in your area. Carefully select your team, they will likely become a part of your extended family. Be prepared to work some pretty big hours the first few years. Don’t over buy. Invest in a POS with quality reporting functionality. A fashion store isn't as romantic as many people perceive it to be. Keeping the ship sailing forward is a lot of work. Did I mention how important the right music in-store is?

What’s your fave Dr Denim fit?
I’m a Snap fan from the start! I've probably worn Snap, five out of every seven days the last 8+ years! Confession, I do get them run in and taken up at the ankle… makes for the perfect fit!

If you're ever in Newcastle, go say hi! You can visit them at 103 Darby St, Cooks Hill or follow them on Instagram @abicus_newcastle.
