Singer-Songwriter Montaigne (aka Jessica Cerro) is one busy lady!

First gracing the airwaves as part of the Triple J Unearthed comp in 2012, her album Glorious Heights has since debuted at #4 on the ARIA charts. Montaigne is now touring the country with back-to-back headliner shows and a sprinkling of festival appearances taking up the rest of the year.

We were lucky enough to grab a few minutes to chat with this infectiously smiley gal!

What were you up to before you became a solo artist?

Before I was a solo artist I was finishing high school hahaha. I suppose I “broke out” onto the scene when I was 17, so even before my last year. I fancied myself doing everything before it became apparent that being a singer-songwriter wasn’t just a pipe dream. I wanted to be graphic designer, a zoologist, a journalist, a translator, a scholar of history, a secondary school teacher, a professional football (soccer) player, the list goes on.

How did you go about choosing the stage name Montaigne?

I read about Montaigne in Alain de Botton’s book The Consolations of Philosophy. I really liked what I read and continued to read about him online, I resonated a lot with the character and approach of Montaigne and was sold after not too long. That he’s French and I studied French for many years is also a nice connection.

What is your greatest indulgence?

Being a somewhat attractive cis-gender white woman.

What part of the planet would you most like to explore?

I reaaaaaAAAAlly want to go to Iceland and Japan.

What was the last track you listened to?

Mrs Potato Head by Melanie Martinez.

Who is your favourite style icon?

I love Freddie Mercury.

Blue or black denim?

Black.

What’s your plan for the next 24 hours?

I’m gonna do some yoga in my room, and then probably watch Gilmore Girls, play Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep on PS3, and hang out with my mum.
