Let's dive in and discover the endless possibilities of DIY denim alterations!
In our first DIY tutorial, we’ll customise straight-fit jeans into a maxi denim skirt:
Front side:
1. Cut the in-seams from both legs open.
2. Cut the front rise seam open until the fly.
3. Place the left side over the right. Pin and stitch with the sewing machine, following the outer edge.
4. Cut off the extra fabric from the reverse side.
Back side:
1. Measure how long your back stitch should be. Notice, that the split starts from the point your back stitch ends. Try the skirt on to see how long the split should be.
2. Draw a line from the lower edge of the back Yoke to where your stitch will end. Try on and adjust the line with needles if necessary. 3. Stitch over the line with your sewing machine.
4. If you want, you can finish the split by folding in the raw edges a few millimetres and stitch over.
Good luck! ✂️
Next, we'll show you how to adjust the waist smaller without a belt:
1. Mark the area for the slits from which the string will go in and out to the waistband.
2. Mark and cut holes for the string. Make sure to make the cut to the waistband’s inner side.
3. Slide the string in and nudge it through the waistband with the help of the safety pin. Be careful so the pin won’t open accidentally.
4. Now you can adjust the waist smaller easily without any belt.
Good luck! ✂️
Finally, let's learn how to shorten jeans length without cutting the leg’s hem and ruining the wash:
1. Measure how much shorter the jeans should be and needle accordingly.
2. The aim is to sew as close as the original stitch as possible, otherwise the trick won’t work. If sewing with a machine feels difficult, you can also do the stitch by hand.
3. Remember to iron the seam so the outcome will look neat.
4. Tadaa! Now you have shorter length AND can keep the original wash of the leg’s hem.
Good luck! ✂️
